Forever young - 128 years of corrugated board....
On November 1st, 1871 Mr. Albert L. Jones from New York filed his idea and received the U.S. licence for the first fluted paper destined for packaging purposes. In 1882 Mr. F.H. Thompson's corrugator was patented in the U.S. The working method of this machine is still valid. Therewith the story of success started: There are hardly any goods that are not packed in corrugated board today.
It are the flutes that give the strength and the versatility to this packaging material. Embedded between two layers of paper shock and pressure are absorbed and protect the goods effectively. The strengths of the construction is striking: a transport packaging for margarine cups resists for instance a compression of approximately 400 kg. The possibilities of corrugated packaging are exactly adapted to the needs of the individual goods packed and their use.
The great variety of products are made to measure solutions and starts already with the corrugated board itself. Hundreds of corrugated grades are offered that are composed of different paper qualities - white, mottled white or brown - with different flute profiles, in single, double or triple wall, water or fat resistant, with water resistant glueing, and thus weather resistant.
Paper and cardboard packaging material are among most used in the world. Even over 50% of all kinds of packaging materials is packaging material made of fibrous structure (wood cellulose).Such significant usage provided them a very high recycle characteristic. Only aluminum cans have a higher recycle factor. Paper and cardboard are made of the same kind of fibrous structure, with a slight difference because the cardboard is thicker and has higher hardness than a common paper.
